1. La Restinga
This former fishing village which has become a diving stronghold on the island of El Hierro is protected by a huge dike. Developed black sand beaches allow you to laze around in the sun and sheltered from the trade winds. Many restaurants allow you to find local dishes and freshly landed fish from the port. There are many private homes in 4-storey buildings.
2. El Pinar (1000m altitude)
Vineyards and farms border this pretty mountain village ranging from 800m to 1000m in altitude. At the end of the village, a huge forest of giant Canarian pines.
The favorite place for snorkelers and swimmers of all kinds, this place is a development on a point of lava overlooking the Marine Reserve where you will find natural swimming pools. Wooden shelters provide protection from the sun and the facilities allow you to have barbecues and other picnics. The sunsets are fabulous there with the nests of shearwaters which start to cry in the distance.
4. La Llanía (1200m altitude)
On the ridge route, a magnificent hike accessible to all levels offers a loop ride through the 3 typical landscapes of the island: giant pines, primary forest and volcanic craters. Routes of 3, 5 or 7 km allow you to enjoy the panoramas in peace with a return to the starting car park. The Mirador de la Llaña will offer you a magnificent view of the Golf de la Frontera.
5. Malpaso/La cruz de Los Reyes (1200m to 1500m altitude)
On the road to the ridges, following the signs, you will come to a parking lot indicating the monument of “La Cruz de Los Reyes” which is a red sculpture representing a cross. From this point you have the choice between going to the top of Malpaso on foot (a good 2 hours) or going there by car by a dirt road. At the summit at 1500m, under the right conditions you can see both sides of the island.
6. Le Phare de la Orchilla
The lighthouse dates from 1933 and is completely automated and cannot be visited, but its surroundings offer a splendid panorama with the waves breaking on the volcanic reliefs (the Meridien Cero monument is located next to it). In the parking lot at the entrance to the lighthouse is a 5-minute walk to the left of the ruins with a staircase leading down to a lava tunnel (visitable with a lamp that leads to the sea).
By continuing the asphalt road after the lighthouse parking lot, you can discover a beach equipped with solar shelters, toilets and natural swimming pools.
7. Ermita de Los Reyes (1000m altitude)
This small white and flowered church from the 16th century will welcome you free and publicly every day (except for mass hours). It houses the famous “Virgin of Los Reyes” in a display case behind the altar. This doll-sized figurine furnished with beautiful fabrics and jewels comes out of its window every 4 years for the “Bajada” (procession) during which the whole island is in turmoil: carriers and dancers cross the whole island over a period of about a month so that the Virgin blessed the villages along the way (GR 131).
8. El Sabinar (Dehesa) : l’arbre couché (1000m altitude)
Symbol of the island, this type of Phenician juniper (Juniperus phoenicea) grows very slowly and is subjected to the onslaught of the wind, causing it to twist until it touches the ground. By this ability to adapt to hostile lands, this tree can live up to more than 1000 years.
9. Verodal and the Arches
This part of the coast is the wildest on the island. No homes are present there but the spectacular landscapes of the waves crashing on the arches created by the sea never cease to hypnotize us. A short 3km walk along these arches is signposted.
10. El Golfo : Frontera, Tigaday, La Maceta and Charco Azul
Exposed to the north, the part of the golf course of Frontera presents numerous greenhouse banana plantations and pineapple farms as well as numerous vineyards. At the exit of the tunnel dug in the mountain, you will come out on Punta Grande where the smallest hotel in the world is located. Along the beach the road to the beaches of Frontera will make you discover the different accesses for the “Charcos”. The large swimming pool of Calcosa is the culmination of a 4 km walk along the side with magnificent points of view. The Ecomusée de Guinea de Frontera is a must-see place to discover the historic volcanic stone dwellings with a guided tour of the lava tunnel ending with the Giant Lizard rehabilitation center of the island. In Tigaday you can visit the steeple of the church located on a hill away from the nave.
11. Pozo de las Calcosas
This fishing hamlet built on an immense tongue of lava is one of the most unique in El Hierro and will give you the opportunity to discover the traditional straw roofs that crown most of the houses built in volcanic stone. You can also enjoy the natural swimming pool with calm waters. Although you can reach the top of the cliff by car, you have to take a pleasant little path with a breathtaking view of the ocean and the winding coast to descend to the village.
12. Charco Manso
The descent is made through a spectacular volcanic cone on a red gravel path. The volcanic basalt mantle line is extraordinarily beautiful and offers a series of natural arcs formed by the waves beating against the rocks, forming types of geysers. The swimming area is a small cove equipped with a solarium. The water is crystal clear and the sea is calm. The Charco Manso is one of the most enchanting places on the island.
13. Valverde (500m altitude)
Capital of the island where there are a few shops and restaurants, the church and the wind turbines that supply the island with electricity. The airport is 15 minutes south of the city as is the port through which the ferry arrives.
14. La Caleta
In this bewitching natural setting near Valverde, visitors can enjoy large saltwater pools with stairs that provide direct access to the sea. The beauty of these pools is all the more striking at high tide, when draws a remarkable waterfall. Its clear, crystal-clear waters are ideal for swimming, scuba diving or enjoying a fantastic day of fishing.
Towards the southwest of the island is the small nucleus of Timijiraque, located next to a pleasant cove of black sand. It is especially interesting to see the remains of the old salt mines, now reduced to the remains of the walls and the reservoir where the salt concentration process began. Timijiraque has a picnic area from where you can enjoy the scenery.
16. Roque de la Bonanza
This castling emerges from the depths of the sea in Las Playas, with its particular shape. It is a volcanic dike that protrudes from the sea surface and which, under the seabed, preserves a splendid wealth of flora and underwater fauna.
17. Hotel Parador
Situated between mountain and sea in Roque de Bonanza, this secluded hotel overlooks the Atlantic Ocean from its location on the tiny tropical island of El Hierro. The modern Parador is surrounded by a lush garden and an outdoor swimming pool, ideal for cooling off after soaking up the Canarian sun. The Parador is one of the last buildings on the route de las Playas.
« P ». Mirador de la Peña
This jewel of the famous Canarian artist César Manrique
offers impressive views of the Frontera Valley
and its steep rocks more than a kilometer high.
In its interior you will find a restaurant
offering a full menu of typical canarian dishes that you can taste
in front of a natural spectacle.
« E ». Mirador de El Julan (1000m altitude)
El Julan offers an intoxicating panoramic view where we can appreciate its vertiginous slope that descends on the sea of Las Calmas, like lava flows falling into the sea.
« I ». Mirador Isora
Perched just outside the village of Isora, this viewpoint offers a spectacular view of the road to Las Playas and the famous Rock of Bonanza.
« L ». Mirador Las Playas
The amphitheater-shaped Mirador de Las Playas is located near El Pinar. From the Las Playas viewpoint, you can see in the distance the Parador de El Hierro hotel and the majestic La Bonanza rock, and sometimes even Tenerife and La Gomera.
