Travel and logistics
You have a wide choice of flights (scheduled or low-cost) to get to the Canaries.
To get to El Hierro , you need to go via TENERIFE or GRAN CANARIA and then take a NATIONAL FLY or a FERRY.
In El Hierro, CAR RENTAL is highly recommended and favoured over public (and cheap) transport.
IN TENERIFE
1) Domestic flight with BINTER or CANARYFLY (approx. 40 minutes) departing from Tenerife NORTH (easy SOUTH-NORTH shuttle)
• BUS / Shuttle Tenerife North - Tenerife South N°343 (1 hour plus waiting time)
• or CAR HIRE ( approx. 40€ from one airport to the other (45min))
OR
2) Ferry crossing with NAVIERA ARMAS (2h30, approx. 50€ per person) departing from Tenerife South (Los Cristianos) in the late afternoon.
NO FERRY ON SATURDAYS.
Useful information
The Canaries, although autonomous, are dependent on the Spanish government. El Hierro is therefore in EUROPE.
The currency is the EURO and the IDENTITY CARD or PASSPORT is valid.
Electric sockets meet European standards (220v).
The official language is SPANISH.
WIFI is available in most of the island's accommodation and cafés/restaurants.
The weather is between 20°C and 30°C all year round on La Restinga, which is the warmest and most sheltered spot on the island.
The wind (Alyzé) can blow during the summer (July-August) and cooler temperatures can be reached at higher altitudes and in the rainforest.
There is a ONE-HOUR TIME DIFFERENCE with France, Switzerland or Belgium.
