Marine Reserve in El Hierro

The Mar de las Calmas, sheltered from the prevailing winds, is a marine biosphere reserve where you can enjoy calm waters and underwater landscapes in temperate waters all year round.

The exceptional underwater depths of the Mar de la Calmas marine reserve, created in 1996, make it one of the main diving spots in the Canary Islands. The waters, protected from winds and currents, are extraordinarily clear.
Visibility from 20 to 40 metres. The subtropical climate means that the water temperature ranges between 19 and 26°C.
Throughout the reserve, angling is the only permitted activity, allowing fish stocks (especially tuna) to replenish.
Its waters are characterised by a continuous calm (diving is possible all year round), as the reserve is sheltered from the trade winds.
Tropical nature, home to species not found in the rest of the archipelago. Because of the volcanic topography of the island
volcanic topography of the island, it reaches depths of over 300 metres. It has an approximate quadrilateral shape with a surface area of 1,180 ha (7.5km2).
